Joe Rosenthal Died

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, by Joe Rosenthal / The Associated PressJoe Rosenthal was a true hero and a great photographer. Those of you who don’t know his name will have seen the picture he is most famous for.

He was with the first waves of marines to hit the beaches of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was not an easy battle. As military historian Dr. Norman Cooper put it:

"Nearly seven hundred Americans gave their lives for every square mile. For every plot of ground the size of a football field, an average of more than one American and five Japanese were killed and five Americans wounded."

On the fifth day a flag was raised to signal to the other American troops that the summit had fallen. The first flag raised that day was too small to be easily seen by the troops landing on the beaches so a second, larger flag was raised. Out of the corner of his eye Joe saw the second flag being raised, turned around and took the picture.
