Sometimes

Sometimes the only thing someone needs is understanding
Not agreement, not even belief
Simply an acknowledgement that that is the emotion they are feeling

Emotions are only real to those who feel them
Those who do not feel that specific emotion are not part of that reality
Sometimes this makes it hard for them to understand

Idiot Programmer

Have someone proofread your error messages. When your error message is so poorly written that the user assumes the issue was due to the fact that the programmer is an idiot, you have earned the title.

I’m not trying to bash non-English speaking programmers. If you are programming in an unfamiliar language, that’s one more reason to have someone who is familiar with the language proofread your copy. That also includes people writing for different dialects of the same language. American, Australian and British English are not the same. The example below is incorrect in any form of English.
